- George Mason, known for buildings such as the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Detroit Masonic Temple, and Belle Isle Aquarium, designed the original mansion built in 1923.
- The English Gothic architecture is inspired by Melrose Abbey in Scotland and contains tile by Pewabic Pottery, imported stained glass windows, and sculptures by several prominent architectural sculptors
- Wirt C. Rowland, famed for designing The Guardian, Buhl, Penobscot, and General Motors Buildings created the original design for the church addition that was built from 1951-1958
Key Project Facts:
The project included interior renovations and repurposing, relocation of a stair, and the addition of an elevator requiring an building addition.
Removed a 25’ section of ashlar block garden wall and cleaned the stone for reuse
Installed stone veneer on the new exterior walls and elevator ‘penthouse’ using a combination of new and salvaged stone including furnishing and installing the air/vapor barrier, rigid insulation, Fero anchors, mortar net, weeps, and laminated copper flashing
Poe Restoration constructed the reinforced elevator shaft and exterior stone addition. This included:
- Removing and salvaging the limestone from the original façade section
- Building a reinforced CMU exterior wall and complex elevator shaft
- Laying the stone exterior addition walls that matched the coursing, texture, and color of the existing adjoining building
- Completing infills and alterations to the existing structure
- Building an ashlar/fieldstone garden wall to match the adjoining wall sections
- Working within a complex project schedule requiring significant inter-trade coordination
