- Historically significant as a preeminent school for African-Americans during a period of informal segregation in the Detroit Schools system
- The school closed in 2007 and was later sold to the Thompson Educational Foundation to be used as a charter school
- Designated Michigan Historic Site and Detroit Historic District, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places
Key Project Facts:
The restoration of the school included significant interior repairs, upgrades, and modifications as well as restoration work and alterations on the exterior
Poe Restoration performed the exterior masonry restoration and alterations for the project in accordance with NPS historic standards. This included:
- Rebuilding sections of the parapet where it was unstable or untrue
- Replacing and rebuilding damaged brick
- Reconfiguring the main entrance while maintaining a historical appearance
- Replacing badly damaged or missing limestone sills, bands, copings, accents
- Patching stones with minor cracking and chipping
- Replacing steel lintels
- Repointing mortar joints with historically appropriate mortar
- Cleaning and removing graffiti using gentle, non-damaging methods
